I'm the office administrator for a 40-person electrical contractor. I've managed purchasing since 2020—roughly $300k per year in materials across 8 vendor accounts. That means I buy a lot of Hubbell, I get asked a lot of questions about it, and I've made enough expensive mistakes to answer from experience. What exactly is Hubbell wiring?
When people say "Hubbell wiring," they usually mean the wiring devices side of the company: receptacles, plugs, connectors, switches, wall plates, and related components. You'll see the logo on a duplex receptacle in a commercial building or on a twist-lock plug attached to a machine.
"Hubbell-Wiring" is how some catalog sites label this category. It's not a separate company. It's the part of Hubbell that makes the stuff you wire into a building, as opposed to the transmission and distribution gear you'd find outside on a pole.
Receptacle configurations follow NEMA WD-6, so a 5-15R and a 5-20R can look almost identical even though they're different products. The part number matters more than the brand name. Most wiring-device part numbers start with HBL, which is why you'll see names like HBL6300 or HBL5362.
Is "Hubbell Chatsworth" the same as Hubbell wiring?
Not exactly. "Hubbell Chatsworth" usually refers to Chatsworth Products, the data center infrastructure maker that is now part of the Hubbell family. It sits under the Hubbell umbrella, but it's a distinct product family from Hubbell wiring devices.
If you're buying racks, cabinets, cable management, or related data center infrastructure, look for Chatsworth Products part numbers. If you're buying receptacles or connectors, look for Hubbell wiring devices. The two are often specified in the same data center project, which is why the names get mashed together.
During our 2024 vendor consolidation, I had to keep those lines separate because they move through different distribution channels. The engineer asked for "Hubbell and Chatsworth components." The purchasing system tried to combine them. They're not interchangeable.
What is the Hubbell 6300?
The Hubbell 6300 is a plug-in receptacle tester. The official part number is HBL6300. It's the little device with indicator lights that you push into a standard 120V outlet to check for wiring mistakes. The lights tell you if the outlet is wired correctly, has an open ground, reversed polarity, or a few other common problems.
We keep a few in every service van. They're not expensive, they don't need batteries, and they're faster than pulling out a meter when you're walking through a building checking receptacles.
I assumed a receptacle tester was the same as a voltage tester. It's not. A voltage tester tells you whether power is present. The 6300 tells you whether the wires are connected in the right order. Both are useful, but they answer different questions.
One honest limitation: the 6300 checks the receptacle, not the rest of the circuit. It can catch an open neutral, but it might not show you a high-resistance splice downstream. For that, you need a multimeter.
Voltage tester vs. multimeter: Which one do I need?
For an electrician, both. For a homeowner, a voltage tester is often enough.
A voltage tester is a go/no-go tool. It says "power is here" or "power is not here." A multimeter goes further: it tells you the actual voltage, current, and resistance. It's what you need when you're trying to find out why a motor won't start or why a circuit drops from 120V to 108V under load.
Voltage testers also come in non-contact and two-lead versions. A non-contact wand is convenient, but I've learned not to trust it as the only dead-circuit check. A two-lead tester gives you a more reliable read.
I learned this the hard way. When I took over purchasing in 2020, I ordered the cheapest non-contact voltage testers for the crew to save money. They worked, but the techs still had to carry a meter for troubleshooting. We ended up buying both. The "saving" was a rounding error compared to the wasted trips.
My rule now: if you're just checking whether an outlet is dead, use a voltage tester. If you're diagnosing anything beyond that, get a multimeter.
What is the best multimeter for electricians?
There is no single best multimeter for electricians. I know that's not the answer you want, but it's the honest one.
For residential and commercial troubleshooting, look for:
- CAT III 600V rating or higher, per UL 61010-1
- Auto-ranging
- True RMS if you work with motor drives or non-sine-wave loads
- A continuity beeper that responds fast enough to trace wires
- A backlit display for dark panels
For industrial work around higher-energy systems, choose a meter rated CAT IV 600V or CAT III 1000V. For low-voltage controls, you don't need to pay for that extra rating. The safety rating matters, but only as much as the environment requires.
Brands like Fluke, Klein, Ideal, and Amprobe all make solid options. I don't have one favorite. I pick the model with the right ratings, a rubber boot for drops, and test leads that are easy to replace.
I also order spare test leads at the same time. The best multimeter in the world is useless when a lead breaks on a Friday.
Honestly, I'm not sure why more electrician-grade meters don't come with a magnetic hanger as standard equipment. My best guess is accessory sales. But that feature is worth searching for.
Why do electricians spec Hubbell when cheaper options work?
Because consistency on a job usually beats a slightly lower unit price.
Hubbell wiring devices have a strong reputation in commercial construction. The company has been around since 1888, and engineers have been writing Hubbell into specs for decades. The dimensions are consistent, the terminal screws are durable, and the assemblies stay tight after years of use. For a contractor, that means fewer callbacks and fewer "which box did we order from" moments.
In our 2024 vendor consolidation, we standardized on Hubbell for most receptacles and connectors. The supply house stocks it consistently, and the field team knows exactly what's coming out of the box.
That doesn't mean it's always the right call. If you need temporary receptacles for a jobsite that will be torn down in six months, a residential-grade UL-listed device will do. Don't pay for a hospital-grade spec in a warehouse storage area unless the contract requires it.
What shouldn't you buy from Hubbell?
For us, the answer is "more specification than we need."
Hubbell doesn't sell multimeters in its wiring device catalog. If you search "Hubbell multimeter," you'll mostly get third-party testers. For a meter, I'd rather buy from a test instrument manufacturer and keep it calibrated.
The same logic applies to cable certification testers for data work. That's a specialized tool category. Don't assume a wiring device company is the go-to source for every tool on the truck.
And if you're doing a one-off home project, you probably don't need to specify commercial-grade Hubbell for every outlet. A UL-listed residential grade device will do the job. Knowing when not to over-spec is part of being a good buyer.
